As you know, I visited(1) my family in Canada at Christmas time. When I arrived in Vancouver, I went(2) to the bank because I needed Canadian money. However, when I saw(3) the money I was very surprised. It looked(4) very different! In Canada, we often use 20(5)-dollar bills. This bill is always green. However, before I left(6) Canada in April 2012, the old bill had(7) a different picture on it. Also, the old one was(8) paper, but the new one is plastic. I thought(9) it was interesting, so I kept(10) one and brought it back to Japan. Please take a look!

Did you know that (1) July 1 is a Canadian holiday? It’s called Canada Day. I don’t think (2) that many Japanese people know about it. Canadians celebrate July 1 because (3) Canada became a country on July 1, 1867. Before (4) it became a country, Canada was three British colonies. In my hometown, people can celebrate together if (5) they go to the town’s big park. When I (6) lived in that town, I always went to that park on July 1. At that park, people can enjoy watching (7) dances and music performances. They can also eat various international (8) foods. This year, my friends and I decided (9) to have a small picnic in Aioi on July 1. I hope (10) it doesn’t rain…

This summer vacation, I went to(1) Hokkaido and Tohoku. One of the places I went to was Akita City. I went there to visit(2) some friends and to see(3) the Kanto Festival. Since childhood, the performers in the Kanto Festival learn how to(4) balance lantern poles on their hands, hips, shoulders, and head. At first(5), the bamboo poles are not very(6) tall, but little by(7) little they are made taller and taller. It can be dangerous, but if(8) the pole starts falling or a lantern catches fire, the performers know exactly what to do(9). They quickly pick up the pole and start(10) balancing it again. I was so impressed, and had a lot of fun!

Do you know about “cat cafés”? You can drink(1) coffee at them like in normal cafés, but cats live there and customers can play with them. I first heard about(2) cat cafés recently. I was very surprised. In Canada, we don’t(3) have them. I was in Tokyo in August, so I thought it was a good idea to go to one to play(4) with the cats. I went to one in Akihabara. The name is NekoJaLaLa. Eight cute cats live there. It’s important to be nice to the cats. You can read(5) a guidebook at the cat café. It tells you what to do(6). For example, you have to(7) follow certain rules. The first rule is that you must(8) wash your hands before touching the cats. Also, you should not (9) surprise the cats. The mood of a cat café is very nice if(10) you follow the rules. Cat cafés are a lot of fun. Please try one sometime!

Have you read the story A Christmas Carol? It was written(1) by Charles Dickens in 1843(2). The story was made(3) into many different movies. It’s fun to watch(4) a different one every Christmas. I have also heard it spoken(5) on the radio. The main character is Ebenezer Scrooge, a rich man who doesn’t want to give(6) anything at Christmas. On Christmas Eve, he is visited(7) by three ghosts who want him to become(8) a nicer man. He is taken(9) to the past, the present, and the future, and learns that it’s good for him to care(10) about other people. I think it’s a nice Christmas message.
